It’s Christmas Sweets Season!

One of my favorite things to make are healthified versions of sweets. I love finding ways to make some of our favorite sweet treats healthier by doing simple swaps.

The other thing I love to do it make recipes that you request!

So to kick off Christmas Sweets Season, I’m so excited to share this recipe, requested by my friend Amanda, for Healthy Puppy Chow!

Healthy Puppy Chow

Simple Healthy Swaps

I had actually never made Puppy Chow before when Amanda requested it. I loved eating it at parties because it’s so darn addictive! But I really wanted to find a way to make this snack healthier.

Since Puppy Chow is typically sugar and crunchy carbs, I wanted to find a way to add in some protein and healthy fats. The perfect way to do this was to incorporate my favorite flavors: chocolate and peanut butter.

For this recipe, I used some chocolate protein powder that I had. This particular brand was pretty sweet, due to the stevia used. You can use any chocolate protein powder you like, and if your chocolate protein powder is not sweet enough to your liking, you can add more stevia or sweetener of your choice. Just note that if it is a granulated sweetener, it may not be small enough granules to  fully dissolve into the coating.

If you're looking for a Chocolate Protein Powder to try, I really like the Vega Protein and Greens in the Chocolate flavor. It might sound weird to have a protein powder with greens in it, but I love the nutritional density of this protein powder by the addition of the fruits and vegetables. Here's an Amazon link to check out this protein powder.

I also used sugar free peanut butter which is usually more runny than sugar filled peanut butter. If your peanut butter is a little too thick, warming it in the microwave for a few seconds or on top of the stove, will help it become looser before tossing it with the rest of the ingredients.
