5 Secretly Healthy Desserts Your Kids will Love

If you are short of dessert ideas for your family, but want them to be healthier, you are in the right place! Whether it is a special occasion, or a regular day that ends with the letter ‘y’, finding a guilt free dessert should not be difficult. Choose one of the secretly healthy desserts below for a yummy sweet treat that you can feel good about eating!

Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake has been around since the 17th century when cocoa from the Americas became more accessible. Bakers in France, the Netherlands, and England, began to use cocoa as an ingredient in their cake bases, and the chocolate cake was born.

These days, there are plenty of types of chocolate cake to keep your kids happy, but the most popular ones are mud cakes, fudge cakes and lava cake. Bake a chocolate cake for a special occasion, make this quick and easy mug cake, or this chocolate bundt cake.

Brownies

Brownies are a tasty dessert that has its origins in the late 19th century. According to one theory, Brownies were created at the request of the American Businesswoman, Bertha Palmer, for ladies to take to the Chicago World’s Columbia Exposition in their lunch boxes.

Nowadays, brownies are equally delicious and convenient, but they also make an excellent treat for kids. I really like this healthy spin on a chocolate brownie from another blogger, Chocolate Covered Katie. There’s about 5 g protein per serving of this brownie!

Whether you want to include a treat in the kids’ lunchbox or something at the end of a special meal, your kids will appreciate chocolate brownies and will likely ask for more.

Pound Cake

A pound cake has its roots in the 17th century as well. Back in the old days in England, pound cakes were made with equal amounts of butter, sugar, flour, and eggs. Unsurprisingly it was a pound of each. Nowadays, the quantities have changed somewhat to make the cake lighter.

Pound cake is a delicious and appealing cake to present at the end of a meal with your kids. Both light and sweet, the perfect poundcake recipe can be used for special occasions or lunchtime treats. They are also great as an after school snack with a hot chocolate!

Apple Pie

When we think of apple pie, we tend to think of an all-American classic, but the roots of the tradition are a little murkier. For one thing, apple pie didn’t originate in America, where the native crab apples were too sour to eat. European apples and trees were brought over by colonists.

No matter where the original apple seeds came from, there are now plenty of native apple trees in America and plenty of people who count apple pie as an all-American tradition - which it is. Start the love of apple pie in your family by treating your kids to a warm homemade version.

I include a great Gluten Free Apple Crumble Pie in my e-book, The Busy Mom’s Guide to Thanksgiving.

Cupcakes

When it comes to offering your kids a treat after dinner or with their lunch at school, cupcakes are a great single-serving treat. Like brownies, cupcakes are simple to make and transport; there is room for creativity when making cupcakes, and your kids can pitch in to make an original recipe.

My kids love this Vanilla Cupcake with a Strawberry Chia Jam filling.
