Do you dread the word "Diet"?

When most people hear the word diet, they are not filled with happy thoughts! Most of the time, they are struck down with thoughts of abstinence, starvation, no happiness or joy. This can be especially hard for people who enjoy their food and are prone to indulging in fast and sugary food. However, the word diet is not synonymous with losing weight, it describes the food you eat, such as a vegetarian diet. It doesn’t necessarily mean cutting out all the things you enjoy. In fact, by doing this, you are less likely to succeed in a diet.

A diet can be fun if you are willing to be a little bit experimental and go outside your comfort zone. Also, it doesn’t mean you have to completely eliminate the things you enjoy.

Curious about how to enjoy. your diet? Find out my simple tips here!

Be Realistic

If you are a fast-food fanatic, then going cold turkey may be quite difficult. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to change overnight. You need to set realistic expectations, like losing x amount of weight and x inches in an appropriate amount of time rather than losing fast then gaining it all as soon as you are off the diet. So, create a six to twelve-month plan, which gives you the time to make the adjustments you need. It may even be prudent to write a list of reasons you are changing your diet. Maybe you have been diagnosed with an illness like type 2 diabetes, or maybe you simply just want to go on holiday in the summer, and the thought of getting into that swimsuit scares you. Whatever your motivation writing it down and leaving is somewhere you can see each day.

If you're finding it challenging to come up with a specific goal and the reason why you want to do it, a nutrition coach can help you to pinpoint your motivation. You can book a FREE 20 minute consultation call right here!

Remove the Temptations

It may be a good idea to go through your cupboards, fridge, and freezer and remove about 80 to 90% of the unhealthy options you have. You don’t have to throw it all away; you can give it away to food banks.

When you live with other people and they like the foods that you don't want to be tempted by, ask them to move those foods to a different location. If you can't see the foods, then you will be much less tempted by them.

Start Slowly

You don’t have to completely get rid of the things you love, but you need to start making better choices. When you are at the supermarket next, spend a little more time in the fruit and veg aisle and pick up a variety of vegetables to create dishes from. A really easy dip can help you eat more veggies. I love this Avocado Bean Dip, because there are veggies in the dip and you can use veggies instead of or in addition to chips.

When you are in the confectionery aisle, limit yourself to one or two treats if this is less than you would normally have. Swap crisps from dried fruit too. If you eat cereal, swap sugary, unhealthy choices for more healthy options. Or try this easy DIY Healthy Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Get Cooking

Often, unhealthy diets happen because we rely too heavily on oven-based easy foods such as pizzas or chips. It's time you donned your chef’s hat and start getting creative in the kitchen!

Find recipes that look great and allow you to create something new out of the vegetables you just bought. You can also even make yourself some treats, such as secret kiss cookies. If you only allow yourself to eat treats you make yourself, then this can prevent you from overeating them. What’s more, cooking can become a passion, you may well find you love it and then you can wow your friends and family next time they come over!
